There was a time when drinking alcohol before one reached the age of consent was simply considered a part of life. It may have been illegal, but the only punishment many minors faced when caught was to have their beverages confiscated by the police. As we have probably all noticed by now, this is no longer the case.

As with drunk driving, public concern about the dangers of underage drinking has grown, prompting state governments to impose harsher penalties for this crime. This article will provide a quick overview of the most common alcohol-related offenses young people commit in Texas, along with the sentences they can face if convicted.

Minor in Possession

It is illegal for people under the age of 21 to have alcohol in their possession, with the following exceptions:

The minor is at work, and his or her job involves serving or working with alcohol The minor in within view of a parents, guardian, or spouse The minor is within view of a police officer who is working to enforce this law (i.e. having a person under 21 attempt to buy alcohol to see if a store will let him)
Consumption of Alcohol

A person under 21 who is caught while actually drinking, and not just with an alcoholic beverage in their possession, facing a different charge than MIP. This is not illegal if the person is within view of a guardian or spouse who has given him or her permission to drink.

For a first time offense, the defendant may receive a deferred disposition, which means the charge may be dropped if he or she stays out of trouble for a given length of time. This is not an option for people facing their second offense.

Attempt to Purchase Alcohol

Simply put, it is illegal for minors to buy or attempt to buy alcoholic beverages. If they use fake ID’s or otherwise misrepresent their ages in the attempt, they will face a second charge called Misrepresentation of Age.

These offenses are considered Class C misdemeanors. The penalties can include

A $250-$2,000 fine and/or a jail sentence of up to 180 days 8-12 hours of community service for first convictions (20-40 for repeat convictions) Suspension of driver’s license for 30 days for first conviction, 60 days for second conviction, and 180 days for the third or more conviction A mandatory alcohol education class

For more information about Texas law, contact Dallas DUI defense attorney Mark Lassiter.

If you are among the millions of Americans making an effort to eat smarter and live healthier, there is something you should know: carbohydrates are not the enemy. On the contrary, these organic compounds are the main source of energy for the body, which makes them an essential part of every healthy diet.

Along with proteins and fats, carbohydrates are one of the three main nutrients found in foods, and they are often grouped into two main categories–simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates consist of up to three units of sugar linked together. Examples include fruit sugar (fructose), milk sugar (lactose) and table sugar (sucrose). Simple carbohydrates are digested quickly and converted to glucose (blood sugar) immediately by the body. As a result, they can be used for energy soon after they are digested.

Complex carbohydrates include foods such as vegetables, legumes and whole grains that are most often high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Unlike simple carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates consist of multiple sugar units linked together in chains. Because of their intricate nature, they are digested more slowly. This means that they are broken down into glucose at a gradual pace and thus provide a steady supply of energy for the body. The high fiber content in many complex carbohydrates plays an important role in this process, as fiber helps to slow the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose. It also helps normalize blood glucose levels by slowing down the time it takes food to leave the stomach and delaying the absorption of glucose from a meal.

Although complex carbohydrates are used more efficiently by the body, omitting simple carbohydrates from your diet is not necessarily the answer when you are trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight. As with any weight loss plan, the phrase “everything in moderation” applies here also. When we consume too many carbohydrates–regardless of whether they are simple or complex–the extra calories are stored as fat, which can lead to weight gain and obesity. Try instead to eat an assortment of healthy carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Such foods contain an abundance of fiber, as well as antioxidant-rich plant compounds called phytonutrients that may help the body fight disease.

At the market, opt for brown rice instead of white; choose whole grain breads and pastas; and experiment with less familiar grains such as quinoa, teff, millet and bulgur when preparing salads and side dishes. Foods that are best to avoid altogether include cookies, pastries, crackers and other foods that contain high amounts of white flour and refined sugars. These highly processed foods have been stripped of much of their nutrient value.

The Candida Diet is a necessary evil, as many of my patients will agree. If you are a Candida sufferer, the diet is something that “you can’t live with yet you can’t live without.” The diet is feared, hated, despised, misunderstood, and often can make the difference between the success and failure in the elimination of the yeasty beast! The purpose of this article is not to explain what the Candida Diet is. This can actually be found on our website in the “patient only section,” or by simply searching the Candida Diet on the internet. The purpose here is to explain why it is important!

I will also explain how the diet is generally healthier than most diets that are being followed in the 21st century.

The Candida Diet is low in carbohydrates, low in sugar, and generally low in fermented foods like vinegar, alcoholic beverages, etc. Candida feeds on sugars. Sugars make it grow and strengthen its adherence to the intestinal lining. While on a Candida Diet, the total amount of carbohydrates for the day should not exceed 150 grams. At the Biamonte Center, we use 3 versions of the Candida Diet that range between 30-50 grams, 60-90 grams, and 100-150 grams of total carbohydrates for the day. Avoiding sugar and alcohol are the most important factors. These substances can cause the fastest and greatest increase in Candida growth. They are the most dangerous. Starches come next. Starches convert to sugars in your body. Candida can feed on healthy sugars just the same as it can on junk food. Many of your patients will notice that sweet fruits will flare their symptoms just as noticeably as junk foods! When eating starches (carbohydrates), choosing those foods that have a lower “glycemic index” rating is best. The glycemic index is a scale that rates how fast a food converts to sugar in you blood stream. Examples of the glycemic index can easily be found on the internet. Fermented foods like soy sauce, vinegar, etc. can be important to avoid, especially if the person has reactionary symptoms from the food. These foods often produce an allergic reaction in the Candida sufferer’s intestinal tract which can upset the good flora and the intestinal immune response. Foods from the fungus family like mushrooms, etc. can be allergens in the same manner as the fermented foods.

Foods high in yeast can have a similar effect to fermented foods and the foods from the fungal family. Foods that contain yeast do not contain Candida. They contain baker’s yeast. This is not Candida. These foods can aggravate Candida by causing allergic reactions, but they cannot cause Candida.

The Candida Diet, though apparently restrictive, is actually higher in nutrients than the diet of the average American. The Candida Diet in fact is very similar to “The South Beach Diet,” “The Zone,” and “The Hunter/Gatherer Diet” (also known as the “Paleolithic Diet”). There are races of people who are all slimmer, stronger, and faster than us. They all have straight teeth and perfect eyesight. Arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression, schizophrenia, and cancer are absolute rarities to them. These people are the last 84 tribes of hunter-gatherers in the world. They share a secret that is over 2 million years old. Their secret is their diet- a diet that has changed little from that of the first humans 2 million years ago, and their predecessors, up to 7 million years ago. Theirs is the diet that man evolved on, the diet that is coded for in our genes. It has some major differences to the diet of “civilization.” You are in for a few big surprises.

The diet is usually referred to as the “Paleolithic Diet,” referring to the Paleolithic or Stone Age era. It is also referred to as the “Stone Age Diet,” “Cave Man Diet,” or the “Hunter/Gatherer Diet.” More romantic souls like to think of it as the diet that was eaten in the “Garden of Eden,” and they are correct in thinking so. For millions of years, humans and their relatives have eaten meat, fish, fowl, and the leaves, roots, and fruits of many plants. One big obstacle to getting more calories from the environment is the fact that many plants are inedible. Grains, beans, and potatoes are full of energy but are all inedible in the raw state, as they contain many toxins. There is no doubt about that- please don’t try to eat them raw. They can make you very sick.

Around 10,000 years ago, an enormous breakthrough was made- a breakthrough that was to change the course of history, and our diet, forever. This breakthrough was the discovery that cooking these foods made them edible- the heat destroyed enough toxins to render them edible. Grains include wheat, corn, barley, rice, sorghum, millet, and oats. Grain based foods also include products such as flour, bread, noodles and pasta. The cooking of grains, beans, and potatoes had an enormous effect on our food intake- perhaps doubling the number of calories that we could obtain from the plant foods in our environment.

Grains, beans, and potatoes (GBP) share the following important characteristics:

– They are all toxic when raw. There is no doubt about this; it is a fact that no competent source would dispute. They can be extremely dangerous and it is important never to eat them raw or undercooked. These toxins include enzyme blockers, lectins, and other types. I will talk about them in detail later as they are very important.

– Cooking destroys most but not all of the toxins. Insufficient cooking can lead to sickness such as acute gastroenteritis.

– They are all rich sources of carbohydrate, and once cooked, this is often rapidly digestible, giving a high glycemic index (sugar spike).

– They are extremely poor sources of vitamins (particularly vitamins A, B-group, folic acid, and C), minerals, antioxidants, and phytosterols.

Therefore diets high in grains, beans, and potatoes (GBP):

– contain toxins in small amounts

– have a high glycemic index (i.e. have a similar effect to raw sugar on blood glucose levels)

– are low in many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytosterols ( i.e. they are the original “empty calories”)

– have problems caused by the GBP displacing other foods

As grains, beans and potatoes form such a large proportion of the modern diet, you can now understand why it is so common for people to feel they need supplements or that they need to detoxify (i.e. that they have toxins in their system). Indeed both feelings are absolutely correct. The essentials of the Paleolithic Diet are:

– Eat none of the following: (Note the following is not the Candida Diet – this information is present in order to compare the Candida Diet to the Paleolithic Diet.)

– grains- including bread, pasta, noodles

– beans- including string beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, snow-peas, and peas

– potatoes

– dairy products

– sugar

Eat the following: (Note the following is not the Candida Diet- this information is present in order to compare the Candida Diet to the Paleolithic Diet.)

– meat, chicken, and fish

– eggs

– fruits

– vegetables (especially root vegetables, but definitely not including potatoes or sweet potatoes)

– nuts, e.g. walnuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia, almond- Do not eat peanuts (a bean) or cashews (a family of their own)

– berries- strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.

Try to increase your intake of:

– root vegetables- carrots, turnips, parsnips, rutabagas, Swedes

– organ meats- liver and kidneys (I accept that many people find these unpalatable and won’t eat them.)

This diet strongly resembles the typical Candida Diet, which in fact is higher in nutrient density than most diets that are followed by the average American.

From a layman’s point of view, we can say that we use the diet to starve Candida in order to kill it. From a more scientific point of view, sugars, when metabolized by Candida cells, help Candida to adhere to the intestinal lining in order to hold on and keep its grip on you! Therefore, the avoidance of sugars can weaken the grip that the Candida has on your intestinal lining.

Sugars also make up and comprise the outer most layers of the yeast cells. A flip to this statement is the sugar, “Mannose.” The sugar, Mannose, is currently being researched by this author, as it has shown the ability to block the adherence of Candida to the vaginal lining and perhaps the intestinal lining.

Candida above all is a yeast/fungus so it can be considered vegetation, like a mushroom. Like brewer’s yeast, it metabolizes sugars and converts them to toxic alcohols called aldehydes. Many of the symptoms of Candida are produced by this toxic alcohol, the toxic proteins called antigens, mycotoxins (fungal toxins), and the neurological toxins (neurotoxins) that the Candida produces. When Candida is fed sugars, it not only strengthens its grip on you but it produces more of these toxins. Starches and carbs are naturally broken down and converted to sugars by your own body. This is normal for your health. However, Candida will eat these sugars as well. Fermented foods contain predigested sugars and substances that react like an allergen with your Candida. So sugars, starches, alcohol, and fermented foods feed Candida and make it worse! They also make it harder for medicines to kill Candida.

Diet, however, rarely causes Candida. It is usually caused by antibiotics, steroids, birth control pills, and other drugs. However, a diet high in sugar, starch, and alcohol, consumed during a period of extreme stress, can bring Candida about as if one took these medications.

At the Biamonte Center, the Candida Diet is used to weaken the Candida by starving it. This makes it more susceptible to the anti-yeast/ anti- fungal substances that we use. The Candida Diet is not used to kill the Candida as its own weapon. Diet very rarely can eliminate Candida. Candida grows a root system into your blood vessels. Here it taps into you blood and feeds on blood glucose and other nutrients. There is always enough blood glucose to keep the Candida alive, despite being on a low carbohydrate diet or even if you fasted. Fasting cannot kill Candida! This is because even when you fast, your body must keep a normal level of glucose (blood sugar) circulating for your brain and muscles to work. However, the low carb diet weakens it, like a weed which has had little water for some time.

Even when it is barely alive, it can continue to survive. And if “watered and fed properly,” could grow again, returning to its former glory.

This is a very important concept to understand when we consider the importance and place the diet treatment holds in the elimination of Candida.

DIET RARELY ELIMINATES CANDIDA. ITS PURPOSE IS TO MAKE THE CANDIDA WEAKER SO THAT THE MEDICINES CAN TOTALLY DESTROY IT!

When you cheat on the diet, the Candida can temporarily increase. If one cheats for 1 day on the diet but continues the Candida rotation and phase 0, little will happen to set one back. Any increase in growth can be reduced within 1-2 days. The more one cheats, the more Candida grows. If one does the program but does not follow the diet, either no progress will be made or the person will continually feel ill from feeding the Candida, then making it grow, and then killing it and becoming toxic from the dead Candida wastes!

So when you cheat a day or so here and there on the diet, it does not defeat the entire program, providing that you stay on the anti-fungal rotation and Phase 0.

WHY IS GLUTEN AND MILK EXCLUDED IN CANDIDA DIETS?

Many of the Candida diets also suggest excluding Gluten and Casein (milk protein) from the diet. What isn’t explained is why. It is observed that most, but not all Candida patients worsen when eating these foods.

A possible theory as to why is that an underlying allergy to these foods causes damage to the intestinal condition, where damage to the intestinal villi occurs. These villi are finger- like hairs that absorb nutrients that pass through the intestines. This damage causes putrefaction and decay of food in the intestines due to malabsorption.

In that case, the Candida is provided with food so it can continue to proliferate. This can also suppress normal, healthy flora and the intestinal immune response. The underlying problem is gluten-induced intestinal damage, but because the Candida is easier to identify, the underlying pathology is missed. Candida could easily eat these foods and release allergens as a by product of its metabolism, which causes intestinal allergies and further degrades the intestinal flora.

WEIGHT GAIN AND CANDIDA

“It’s Not Your Fault”

If you have failed to lose weight despite following a diet exactly, it could be due to Candida. The late Dr. Robert Atkins, an international expert on the low carbohydrate diet, says in his books that Candida or low thyroid function can prevent weight loss despite a low carbohydrate diet. Candida adversely affects your metabolism and interferes with many hormones, nutrients, and the body’s ability to burn fat!

One of the major secondary problems associated with Candida Albicans is weight gain. A number of the problems associated with loosing weight and staying with a diet are due to Candida Albicans. A person with Candida Albicans will often crave sugar and simple carbohydrates because this is the main source of nutrients for yeast. Mood swings and depression are often associated with the rapid change in blood sugar levels caused by the yeast.

Lower thyroid function, lower Dhea levels, Estrogen dominance, and elevated Cortisol levels are all typical in someone with chronic Candida. Each of these situations has been known to contribute to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. Focusing on removing Candida Albicans from the body rewards the dieter with a feeling of well being and weight loss that is steady, sustainable, and healthy. Very often a person trying to lose weight will not be able to do so because of a Candida infection.

A NEW MIRACLE FOOD TO STOP SUGAR AND CARBOHYDRATE CRAVINGS SO YOU CAN STAY ON THE DIET!

Hemp Hearts (Shelled Hemp Seed) is a natural food that is concentrated with all of the required proteins, essential fats, and many vitamins and enzymes, and contains only insignificant quantities of saturated fats and carbohydrates.

Because Hemp Hearts provides people with an excellent balance of proteins and essential fats, they will have less difficulty avoiding the sugar and starchy carbohydrates that cause obesity and many other late onset health problems. Individuals who use Hemp Hearts as described above–eating them in the morning for their nutritional essentials, to increase their energy and reduce their dependence on sugar and carbohydrates, and having all day to burn off the calories–these individuals always experience profound health benefits.

Except for those with diabetes and other conditions which may seem to require individuals to eat more frequently, most people eat at least four, but usually five, measuring tablespoons of Hemp Hearts early each morning, preferably on fruit and yogurt (vegetables for diabetics), but also sometimes on cereal. They frequently report that they are not yet hungry at lunch time, and often only slightly hungry at three or four o’clock in the afternoon. Those who are overweight can quite easily limit themselves to a large salad in the afternoon. Because those who eat Hemp Hearts in quantity every morning are nutritionally satisfied, they have less difficulty avoiding foods made with sugar, flour, potatoes, pasta, and rice, and they are less inclined to regain lost weight.

I recently read an article on a blog entitled “Crime and Poverty” by Matthew Yglesias that discussed gang violence in Los Angeles. One of the main points made by Mr. Yglesias was that a better school system will not stop certain tactics used by gang members for recruitment. Building on this theme, I think that something besides “more education” is needed in to significantly reduce the gang violence in LA. Sure, more education would possibly help but what about the educational opportunities that currently exist?

Are Gangs A Black Hole?

One commenter on Mr. Yglesias’ blog made the following statement: “gangs are a black hole that sucks everything around them in, but that those who are in them do so because they have no other options.” How accurate is this statement? Do all LA teens get sucked into gangs? Do local LA churches, social service agencies, the police, and recreation centers all get sucked into the gang’s black hole? Are there really “no options” for gang members?

Lots of Excuses

I am not trying to minimize what’s going on in Los Angeles regarding gang violence but it seems to me that a lot of excuses and a lot of quitting are also taking place in the streets of LA. What’s stopping the teens in LA from learning something of value in school? Doesn’t anyone from LA ever graduate from high school and go to college? What are the gang members’ parents doing to help change the current situation? Speaking of parents, don’t the parents of gang members have some responsibility in the mess that has been created? For the sake of argument, even if the parents of most gang members are divorced or separated, does this mean that children of all broken homes are destined for failure?

Poor Coping Skills

It sounds like a lot of teens in LA have terrible coping skills and are also copping out big time. When facing adversity, some people gravitate toward the quick fix, the easy way out, and to the course of least resistance while others refuse to give in, focus on positive goals, and roll up their sleeves and get to work on something productive. LA’s gang violence is a striking example of what happens when people fail to look to the legitimate and traditionally accepted vehicles for advancement and mobility and instead look at “phony” and highly glorified “options.” Indeed, when teens look to self-centered sports figures, gangster rappers, thugs, criminals, and drug dealers for “guidance” that will be instrumental in their “career decisions” instead of staying in school and actually learning a trade or a skill that will lead to an honest, fulfilling living, what kind of “fallout” is to be expected? What kind of neighborhood will result?

Let’s Muddy the Waters With Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

The aforementioned analysis of gang behavior was undertaken without bringing up another important consideration: until now, not one word has been mentioned about gang behavior and drug and alcohol abuse. Would it surprise anyone to learn that the teens who make up the LA gangs are heavily involved in alcohol abuse and drug addiction?

Conclusion

Gang violence is a complex phenomenon that needs to be addressed from a number of avenues. For instance, parents of gang members need to learn better parenting skills and gang members need to learn better coping skills. Gang members and their parents also need to quit making excuses and copping out and start taking responsibility for the deplorable living conditions they have created and perpetuated. In addition, gang members need to take advantage of the resources that are available at local social service agencies to help them rise above their violent lifestyles. Furthermore, gang members need career counseling so that they can learn something in school that is concrete, doable, financially rewarding, and worthy of their hope for a more productive and meaningful life after they graduate. And finally, to the extent that gang members abuse alcohol and/or drugs, they need professional help if they are to avoid a lifetime of unhealthy and destructive consequences.

Copyright 2007 – Denny Soinski.

Teenage drunk driving is a serious problem for our nations youth. It’s hard to believe but more and more teenagers are using and abusing alcohol and/or drugs than ever before. Combine that with the intense peer pressure that teenagers go through and we have a serious problem called teenage drunk driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers between the ages of 15 and 20. One report puts the numbers of high school students who admit to driving after drinking at almost 50% of those polled. That’s a staggering statistic by any means but what’s even worse is that these are teenagers who aren’t used to being behind the wheel, going through emotional changes/puberty, and subject to a tremendous amount of peer pressure.

The problem comes from the amount of teenagers with access to alcohol and/or drugs. Statistics show that one out of every ten teens (age 12-13) drink alcohol at a minimum of once per month. By limiting the access that these teenagers have to drugs and/or alcohol we are half way there to controlling this dangerous problem of teenage drunk driving.

Teenage drunk drivers also face some serious legal consequences that will harm them into their adult lives. They face revocation of their driving privileges, stiff fines, probation, alcohol education and treatment, and community service not to mention potential jail/prison time for a severe offense.

Overall this problem has not gotten enough publicity and awareness… most parents don’t realize that their kids have access to alcohol nonetheless that they ‘may’ be driving drunk. The solutions to this problem encompass education, awareness, preventing access to alcohol, and most of all prevention.

One of the most important changes you can make to prevent diabetes is your daily diet. Obesity has been shown to be a contributor to the onset of type 2 diabetes. A good way to lose weight is to start eating more fiber rich foods and less high fat foods. Try eating smaller meals during the day instead of three larger meals it helps to curb your appetite. Do some research and find out which foods will keep your blood sugar level normal. Water soluble fiber found in oat bran, nuts, seeds and apples balance your blood sugar level. Soy products, whole grains, onions and garlic keep you from being chromium deficient. Eat the lean proteins like chicken, turkey and fish.

Start an exercise program. Try to exercise at least half an hour a day doing any exercise that will elevate your heart rate for that same amount of time. You can reduce your chances of getting diabetes by 50% if you just walk vigorously for 30 minutes 5 days a week. The benefits of exercise are not just to fight against diabetes. You will be making your body stronger, building muscle, improving your heart and lung capacity and burning fat. It has also been shown to increase tissue levels of chromium. Since chromium deficiency is a symptom of diabetes exercise and a dietary change can be the best keys to prevention.

If you are a smoker then quit. One of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes is smoking. We all know that smoking is bad for your health. Besides being one of the possible causes of diabetes it is related to lung cancer, throat cancer, high cholesterol, and heart attacks. Cut back on your alcohol consumption. Alcohol is processed by the body the way it processes fats. The carbohydrates in alcohol are quickly absorbed which can contribute to type 2 diabetes. It also has a lot of calories and tends to make you hungry. Try to stay away from alcohol as much as possible if you are trying to prevent diabetes.

What Is Kentucky’s DUI Law? What Does It Mean?

DWI/DUI is an abbreviation of driving while under the influence of intoxicants (alcohol) or of any substance or substances which impair driving ability. Other substances can include illegal drugs, prescription drugs, inhalants such as glue, gasoline, spray paint etc., and/or over the counter medications. Kentucky’s DUI law has an “Illegal Per Se” provision. “Illegal Per Se” (On the face of or by itself) means it is illegal to drive with a blood or breath alcohol content of 0.08 or higher.

Highlights of Kentucky’s DUI Law

Here are highlights from Kentucky law on driving under the influence (KRS Chapter 189A). Legal terms associated with drunk driving in Kentucky.

‘Per Se’ BAC Level: .08

Zero Tolerance BAC Level: .02

Enhanced Penalty BAC Level: .18

Implied Consent Law: Yes

License Suspension 1st Offense: 30 days

License Suspension 2nd Offense: 1 year

License Suspension 3rd Offense: 2 years

Mandatory Jail Time after 2nd offense: Yes

Mandatory Alcohol Education: Yes

Mandatory Assessment/Treatment: Yes

Possible Ignition Interlock: Yes

Possible Vehicle Confiscation: Yes

Hardship License while license suspended: No

Open Container Law: For driver and passenger

These are highlights of the main provisions of Kentucky law pertaining to drunk driving. Other factors can increase the penalties for drunk driving, such as if an injury or death occurred, or if a child was endangered.

Source: KRS Chapter 189A

Another Important Fact to Know: 90% of DUI arrests occur between 10PM and 3AM.

How Can I Clear My DUI Record?

You may have some options available to clear your record. Your first option after a DUI conviction is to seek a new trial from the court. If there was an error in the admission of evidence at your trial or some other procedural problems, your attorney can ask the court for a new trial. If the judge grants your request for a new trial, you will be allowed to present your entire case again, this time before a new jury. If you’re found not guilty after your second trial, then your record will be cleared and the legal effect would be as if you never were convicted. If the judge refuses to grant you a new trial, or you lose at your second trial, you may be eligible to appeal your DUI conviction. If there is an error of law at your trial, or the jury completely disregarded the facts, you may have grounds for an appeal. An appeal involves filing briefs with the court and an oral argument-you will not be required to appear or participate in the appeal. If your appeal is successful, your conviction will be reversed, and your record will be cleared.

The Truth about Lawyers – Even though lawyers are the brunt of a lot of jokes out there, they really are in the legal industry to help you. You could hire one of the most expensive lawyers out there to represent you for your DUI case, and you will still pay less money to him than you would to the court system. If you had the option to pay a certain amount of money to the court, have your license taken away, have to go to jail and spend a weekend at a conference where they describe to you how bad drinking and driving is… OR, pay a lawyer a smaller amount of money, have a good chance of keeping your license, have a better chance of having the DUI dropped and to stay out of jail, wouldn’t that be better?

For residents of Florida that want to get their driver’s license, education is a must. The Florida government requires all first-time drivers in the state to pass a Drug and Alcohol Traffic Awareness (DATA) course also called a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course prior to getting their license.

Fortunately, taking the course has become more convenient, thanks to Florida traffic schools offering online versions of the course. The course takes approximately four hours to complete, and those taking it are able to login and logout as many times as they need to in order to finish the course. The system will automatically log the time each test-taker has spent online so as to help them keep track of the time they have spent taking it.

For those who have just moved to Florida, drug and alcohol courses like this one are meant to teach them all about the state-specific rules and regulations they need to follow in order to be able to drive in the area. This is why they are comprehensive programs.

The DATA course, and others like it, teach drivers how the abuse of alcohol and other substances can affect the ability to drive, inform them of all the laws they need to follow and their responsibilities as drivers, and instruct them on safe and defensive driving techniques and how driving awareness on roadways can be improved.

Upon the successful completion of this Florida traffic school course, drivers may also elect to take the exams for their drivers’ licenses online as well. This system is thus geared towards offering Florida drivers the utmost in convenience.

Introduction

How cutting back on alcohol can help you get in shape for summer.

Whether you’re planning a trip to sunnier climes or enjoying the British summer, the hot weather provides the perfect opportunity to catch some rays. Inevitably, this involves showing off our bodies a little more and squeezing in to last year’s swim suit. Unfortunately, if you’ve spent the winter months snuggling up with a hot chocolate on the couch, it’s possible your body won’t be as beach ready as you had hoped.

Most of us know that eating well and exercising regularly will help shift those winter pounds for the summer months. But it’s worth noting that what you drink could also have a big impact on your appearance.

Calorie controlled diet

Research shows that the best way to lose weight is through good old fashioned diet and exercise. A vital element of this is keeping track of the number of calories you consume. According to Claire Williamson from the British Nutrition Foundation, alcohol can contain even more calories than food.

“Alcohol is a significant source of calories,” she says.

“Each gram of alcohol you consume contains seven calories. In contrast carbohydrates, such as bread, only contain four.”

Surprisingly, just one pint of beer can have up to 250 calories. It’s easy to see how drinking to excess can add up and cause weight gain. Claire explains that people’s regular drinking habits can have a big effect on their appearance.

“The calorie intake from alcohol tends to be in addition to the rest of our diet,” she says.

“For instance, if you eat a big breakfast, you’re likely to feel fuller and so eat less at lunch. However, many people will drink wine with a meal even if they already feel full – adding to the number of calories they’ve already consumed.” Alcohol can also increase your appetite.

Getting active

Running to work or taking classes at the gym can be a great way to get your body looking toned for the summer sun. Working up a sweat can be hard work and, more often than not, drinking too much alcohol can undo the benefits of exercising.

Our bodies work by storing nutrients, protein and carbohydrate; however we do not store alcohol in the same way. As a result, burning alcohol takes priority over burning fat. Not good news if you’re hitting the gym to shed some pounds.

Whilst working out at the gym could help shift some excess weight, it won’t help curb the long term effect s of drinking alcohol. Choosing to drink less alcohol lowers the risk of developing liver disease, contracting cancer and developing heart disease later in life.

Getting a beach body

If you’re planning on getting in to shape for the beach, it’s best to start by setting achievable goals and keeping track of the alcohol you drink on a regular basis. Starting with the recommended daily guidelines will help. The guidelines recommend that women should not regularly exceed 2-3 units daily and that men should not regularly exceed 3-4 units daily. A glass of wine, or a pint of 5% lager, is around three units.

Keeping track of your drinking as part of a healthier lifestyle can help you look great for summer and in the long term. Claire recommends making a long-term healthy lifestyle change, rather than trying crash diets or intense periods of exercise.

“Dieting to lose weight is relatively difficult,” she says.

“It may sound boring, but a balanced diet along with regular exercise is much more likely to have a beneficial effect.”

Most people only concentrate on what to eat and ignore the fact as to how much to eat is the right amount. With increase in consumption of processed foods and junk foods, there are bulging waist lines across the world. People need to get educated on what to eat and what to avoid, in order to stay healthy and lose weight.

Limit your carbohydrates intake

It is needed to consume certain amount of carbohydrates regularly, but you should understand that there are good and bad carbohydrates. Refined flour and its products like pasta, white bread, cakes, etc are categorized under bad carbohydrates. Even polished rice is bad. Instead consume good carbohydrates like the brown rice, wholemeal bread, whole wheat pasta, etc. This way you can get the required amount of carbohydrates in your diet. But remember to eat them moderately.

Keep away from juices

Processed juices are loaded with carbohydrates and calories, avoid them. Instead, consume fresh fruits, this way you not only get the vitamins and minerals from the fruit servings, but also get other benefits, which you will miss, if you consume processed fruit products.

Reduce the excess intake of alcohol

If you are not exercising, then it is better to avoid alcohol consumption. A daily dose of a beer can drastically increase your weight in a few weeks. It is better to limit the alcohol intake to a beer can or a wine glass, that too once a month.

Stay away from junk

Fast foods are a definite no, if you want to lose weight. They do no good to you at all. Instead of loading yourself with empty calories, try to stick to healthy choice of snacks, like a fresh apple or an orange, when you feel hungry in between meals.

Say no to cakes and pies

A small piece of cake can load you with around 360 calories and the worst part is that half of these calories are from the fat content in the cake.
